Notes: The Sacagawea dollar was made to replace the Susan B. Anthony Dollar. The golden color and smooth edge were meant to address the criticism of the SBA that it was easy to confuse with a quarter. However, in spite of a promotional campaign, the Sacagawea dollar never gained popularity. Sacagawea dollars were only minted for circulation in 2000 and 2001, with small production in subsequent years for sale to collectors. Many Sacagawea dollars made their way to Ecuador, which uses the US dollar for currency and doesn’t produce a dollar coin.
With the passage of the Native American $1 Coin Act in September 2007, the Mint began designing a series of Sacagawea dollars with different reverse designs to commemorate Native Americans. Four will be minted, one per year from 2009 to 2012. The first was released in January 2009 and shows a Native American woman sowing seeds of the Three Sisters (squash, maize, beans). The Act requires that 20% of total dollar coins minted during the Presidential $1 Coin Program be Sacagawea dollars.
